Why would I have a breast reduction?

Breast reductions are performed for both relief of medical symptoms and enhancement of cosmetic appearance. Many women suffer from large, pendulous breasts and may experience a variety of accompanying difficulties: neck pain, back pain, bra straps cutting into their shoulders, and skin irritations under their breasts. Large breasted women often feel self-conscious and limited in their ability to exercise and perform daily living activities. If you are experiencing these problems, then a consultation for a breast reduction may be the start to a new more fulfilled life.

What can you tell me about the procedure?

The procedure removes excess tissue and skin from the breast creating an uplifted, lighter, and shapely form. In addition, the stretched areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) is designed to be proportional to the new breast and relocated to a more natural, uplifted position on the breast. The area and length of the incision will vary depending on the amount of reduction. Fortunately, the incisions are easily covered by your bra or bathing suit. In select cases, the procedure can be performed or assisted with liposuction, which minimizes the scar and improves the lateral breast contour. View breast reduction photos.

What are the surgical descriptions?

The length of the procedure will vary from 2-4 hours depending on the size of the reduction. It is performed under anesthesia in our accredited surgery facility or in the hospital. An overnight stay may be required in larger reductions, otherwise it can be performed as a day surgery.

What should I anticipate about the recovery?

Your medical symptoms experienced before surgery (secondary to your large breasts) should significantly improve immediately after surgery. You should expect temporary bruising and swelling which resolve in a couple of weeks. The discomfort postoperatively tends to be minimal and well controlled with oral medication. Your return to light work and driving should be possible after 7- 10 days. However, it is recommended that strenuous activities and heavy lifting be postponed for a minimum of 3 weeks.

What other tips do I need to know about?

Some insurance companies pay for this procedure if it is deemed medically necessary. Dr. Awada will be glad to consult with you and send your medical information to your insurance company for their determination.
